My full name is James Hazel Jess Williamson. When I registered my son's birth in Sedgley, Staffordshire, in 1965, the Registrar
asked for my full name, then asked if they wanted a girl when I was born. So
after picking him up off the floor and dusting him down, I explained that I was
named after my Grandfather (Mum's Dad), James Hazel Jess, as indeed was the tradition in our family, so the middle names, perhaps a little
unfortunate in the spelling, were actually surnames, and names of which I am
fiercly proud. My Great-Great-Grandmother Margaret Hazle was born at Craigfin, about 3 miles from Maybole, on 19 Feb 1849. She had a liason with a William Brown, resulting in the birth of my Great-Grandmother Mary Wason Brown on 4 Feb 1870. Mary Wason Brown then married my GGF David Jess on 30 Nov 1886 in Maybole and my Grandfather James Hazel Jess was born in 1887. It would appear that it was with my Grandfathers birth that the spelling changed from H-A-Z-L-E to H-A-Z-E-L. We have no idea why but an educated guess would be that the person registering the birth of my G/father wasn't the most educated of people so incorrectly spelt the name. Whatever the reason, I could cheerfully shake the prat firmly by the throat for all the hassle he caused me during my school years. I used to dread having to say my full name as I was always ribbed by my schoolmates. 1. Robert HAZLE-. Robert married Agnes GAIRDNER-. They had the following children: +2 M i. Margaret HAZEL- was born 19 Feb 1849. Third Generation 7. Margaret HAZEL- (Robert, Robert) was born 19 Feb 1849. Margaret had a liason with William BROWN resulting in the following child: +8 F i. Mary Wason BROWN- was born 4 Feb 1870 and died Unknown. There is no record of John Brown and Margaret Hazel ever having married. The LDS shows the father as William Brown but the marriage certificate of Mary Wason Brown and David Jess list the father as John Brown (Reputed Father). Fourth Generation 8.Mary Wason BROWN- (Margaret HAZEL, Robert, Robert) was born 4 Feb 1870 in Maybole, Ayrshire. She died Unknown Listed on marriage certificate as a Farm Servant, living at Craigfin, Maybole, aged 18, which does not quite tie in with birth as 4 Feb. 1870 on LDS (internet). This may have been deliberate mis-information as she was only 16. LDS also list father as William Brown but marriage certificate lists him as John Brown (Reputed Father). As the Assistant Registrar wrote 'Reputed Father' on her marriage certificate he would appear to have been aware that John Brown was not the actual father? Informants Margaret HAZLE, Mother/William BROWN, Father/Trees, Maybole Mary married David JESS-, son of James Jess and Janet DRYNAN (OR DRENNAN) , on 30 Nov 1886 in Maybole. David was born 5 jul 1866 in Kirkoswald, Ayrshire. He died 3 Jun 1950 in 47 Coral Glen, Maybole. Death Certificate states:David Jess Ploughman (Retired) married to Mary Wason Brown died 3rd June 1950 at 6. l5am at 47 Coral Glen, Maybole Father = James Jess Ploughman (deceased) ~...
